I’ve learned a lot of skills over the past 20 years, but the ability to write order producing copy may be the most valuable one.
No money exchanges hands until something is sold.
I couldn’t sell my way out of a paper bag before I came online.
I once had a job selling satellite dishes door-to-door.
During my short period working for that company, I sold a grand total of 0 dishes.
They fired me after two weeks since they had to pay minimum wage to anyone who didn’t earn enough commissions.
I jumped from one network marketing company to the next…each one telling me how there was ‘No Selling Required.’
There was always selling required!
It doesn’t matter how they tried to hide the selling side of the equation, it was there staring you in the face.
If you didn’t sell, you didn’t make any money.
The beauty of the Internet is you don’t have to do any selling face-to-face.
You don’t even have to get on the phone if you don’t want to.
Your website can be your 24-7 salesperson. It’s out there on the web communicating with prospects and making sales for you automatically.
But making sales online didn’t come any more naturally to me than face-to-face selling.
I had to buckle down and study. I spent tens of thousands of dollars on training about how to write effective copy. In the beginning I studied Gary Halbert and Jay Abraham. That expanded out to Ted Nicolas, John Carlton, Eugene Schwartz, Robert Collier, John Caples, Bob Bly, Clayton Makepeace, and many others.
I devoured everything I could get my hands on about turning words into cash.
Those experts told you to write out successful copy by hand.
So that’s what I did. I took their letters and wrote them out by hand. I even recorded an audio of me reading their letters so I could play it back over and over again.
I started writing. My first few letters were so hypey it looked like someone puked out a huge string of emotional ‘power’ words all over the page. But people started buying!
Nothing felt better than those first few orders which came from something I personally wrote.
Of course I’ve practiced a ton of other skills over the years including designing websites, generating traffic, holding webinars, creating info products, coaching, and way too many other things to mention.
I’ve developed basic technical skills, and those have served me well.
But nothing has been as valuable to me as learning how to create copy that turns visitors into sales.
It’s the Midas Touch. It’s like turning lead into gold.
You can do it over and over again as often as you want.
Some of my clients love the technical aspects. Others often get locked out of their own websites.
But all of my 6-figure and up clients can create at least decent sales copy. They might not be world-class, but they can get-by.
