internet entrepreneur qualificationsI’m looking for your feedback and opinion on this subject.

What do you feel are the most important qualifications to being an internet entrepreneur?

Have you noticed that the common pitch for internet business is that ‘Anyone can do it?’

Well, if anyone can do it, why do 80% of the people fail at it?

Ouch…really do you think it’s that high?

We don’t have a really accurate number to use here, because there aren’t surveys that would give full details…and just because someone isn’t successful yet doesn’t mean they won’t be.

It’s probably higher, but we’ll simply use the 80% number as it fits in well with the 80/20 rule of results.

If ANYONE can do it, then why do so many fail at it?

And more importantly…how can you make sure you’re not one of these failed statistics?

As I was thinking about this subject, I realize I’ve done people a disservice by saying “Anyone can do it.”

I truly believed it when I’ve said it in the past.

When I used the phrase, I meant your race, sex, nationality, or educational background didn’t matter.

When I came online, I was a failure at college…at direct sales…and any type of business.  I had a corner of the basement as a testament to my failures in previous business ventures.

The fact I was a severe introvert and seriously in debt didn’t hold me back either.

The common “qualifications” you’d expect for a successful business simply wouldn’t have applied to me.

Let’s say being an internet entpreneur was a job.  Yes, I know.  People refer to a job as “just over broke.”

Let’s ignore that for a moment.  Any decent job has qualifications.

What are the qualifications to being a successful internet entrepreneur?

The most common job requirement is experience.  Obviously that isn’t required for an internet entrepreneur to get started (although it will help them long-term as they develop it).

Then we have things like a high school diploma, GED, Bachelor’s Degree, and on up.  Obviously those aren’t required for an internet entrepreneur either.

How about this common one: “strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills?”

Most successful internet entrepreneurs I know do have strong written OR verbal communication skills.  If they don’t have them when they get started, they develop them as they grow.

The Internet is all about communicating your ideas.  And if you can’t communite either in a written or a verbal (audio/video) format, then it is difficult to succeed.

What about good organizational, time management, or problem-solving skills?

Murphy’s Law lives online.  If you can’t solve unexpected problems that come up from time to time, then you’re in trouble.

And it’s easy to waste all day in forums, social media, and email without getting any real work accomplished if you’re not careful.

This is another one of those skills you’ll have to develop over time if you don’t have it starting out.

How about this job qualification: “Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment?”

Most definitely!  That sounds like the Internet itself.

What job qualifications would you add to this for an internet entrepreneur?

Obviously not everyone is cut out for this business…so what is it that really sets those apart who can succeed online?
