Lead Magnets That Attract Buyers

It’s not about the size of your list.

It’s about how many buyers you have.

I’d rather have a list of 10,000 buyers than 100,000 free subscribers.

Of course I’d rather have either one than 1,000,000 Facebook likes. Facebook and any other social media site can be a valuable way to attract an audience, but you’re simply a guest in front of THEIR audience.

Your email list is YOUR audience.

Even better would be having all the above.

A lead magnet is a gift you use to ‘sell’ people on joining your list.

You’re not going to have many takers if you simply put up a subscription box that says, “Register here for my free newsletter.”

Instead you give them a free video, audio, or PDF. If you’re in an ecommerce business, you could give them a 10% OFF coupon for their first order.

Some of my favorite gifts are Cheat Sheets and templates.

If you’re selling to dog owners, it could be your 1 page cheat sheet for house training your puppy.

If you’re selling to business owners, you could give them several email templates for attracting more customers.

Your lead magnet must grab attention in a competitive marketplace. And your promise has to be strong enough that they’re willing to exchange their email address for your gift.

Yes, you have to sell them on your gift.

But that’s only Job #1 for your Lead Magnet. It also has to position you as an authority and serve as a bridge to your product or service.

If you’re selling a book as your front-end item, you could give several chapters of that book as your lead magnet.

Let’s say you’re selling a course on adding distance and consistency to your golf swing. Your lead magnet may be 1 weird trick that adds an extra 15 yards to your drive.

Your lead magnet needs to attract the ideal prospect for your course.

This means your lead magnet may give the first step in the process. It’s useful but incomplete. They gain value and get results. But they’re left hanging if they want to continue further into your system. That’s where your full course comes in.

Or you could reposition the problem in a totally new light. The reason they’re not losing weight isn’t what they thought it was at all. It’s the toxins in their liver and here’s what to do about that.

Or you might give them a thousand-foot overview without going into all the small details. The nitty gritty details are in your course itself.

Or perhaps you give away all the information, because you have a done-for-you service that makes the whole process easier.

One of my clients gives away a video that teaches his subscribers how to write ads that attract new high quality clients to them. Then he sells them on his kit full of already done ads to save them on all the hassle of creating ads themselves.

There are a lot of options here. You have to attract attention, give value to build your authority, and then bridge that interest toward your product or service.

The biggest mistake I see made with lead magnets is focusing simply on attracting a large audience. It’s not about the size of your audience.

It’s about attracting ideal buyers for your product and service.
