The cardinal marketing sin is being boring.” – Dan Kennedy

I personally struggle with this.

I did my first speech about online marketing more than two decades ago.

At the end of my 4-hour presentation, Ron Legrand told me, “You don’t have to be funny to speak. You just have to be funny if you want to get paid.”

I delivered some amazing information.

But it was boring!

People will forgive you for making mistakes.

One of the attendees mentioned they saw my hands shaking. I frequently mispronounce words. And I’m sure you can find a few typos if you’re looking for them.

I don’t recommend purposely making mistakes, but they can humanize you to a point.

And you might find yourself with some free proofreaders also.

But if you lose people’s attention…they’re gone.

So, I’ve had to look for ways to inject more interest in my writing over the decades.

Perhaps these 3 simple methods can help you as well.

1: Focus on your ideal clients’ problems and desires.

Give value.

But it’s even more important to identify your audience’s burning pain points.

What causes them to lie awake at night?

What do they daydream about?

What motivates them into action?

Hint: you can discover these pain points by simply asking…or by lurking in the online communities where they hang out.

Often, the best emails and social media posts go deep in the problems themselves…revealing the root cause of the problem. Your products and services are the solution.

That’s where the 2nd method comes in…

2: Storytelling

Communicate through stories.

They could be personal stories or case studies from clients.

People will forget your 3 points, but they’ll remember your story.

Back when I spoke at conferences, there were attendees who would come up to me and ask if I was going to be sharing the story about XYZ again (one I had shared many times before).

They were looking forward to the same story…or wanted those around them to hear it also.

And yes, this does mean you’ll have some repetition in your emails and other content.

Because it’s those stories that connect with your audience.

3: Boldness with your message.

You’re biased.

I’m biased.

Every news outlet is biased.

Trying to deny it is crazy. We’re humans. And we’re made up of all the experiences (stories) we’ve had up till now. Even AI is biased by the programming put into it.

Be bold about the root cause of the problems you solve. Be bold about your solutions.

Throw every hint of wishy-washiness out the window.

Become a tour guide to a new world…new possibilities and new experiences.

Show them the pathway to a new lifestyle.

Be a little extreme about your topic.
