What is your favorite free traffic method?

There are tons of options!

From blogging…to podcasting…to every social media channel available…

You can’t do it all!

You need to choose a traffic source where your ideal customers hang out, where you’re comfortable producing content, and that fits the long-term plans for your business.

Youtube is the choice many of my clients have made.

Several have been on Youtube for years, and have built up sizable subscriber numbers there.

Of course, the real money in their businesses come from getting those viewers off Youtube and onto their email list.

Other clients have only recently started up Youtube channels, and they’re growing quickly.

Here are a few tips to help you out (these tips apply to most forms of content marketing)…

#1: Find Your Message

With all the Youtube channels already out there, why should someone listen to you?

It could be because you focus on a specific subset of the audience (bodyweight fitness for men over 50) or it could be because your methods are contrarian to the majority in your market.

But don’t get too hung up on this on day one. Start producing amazing content.

You’ll find your groove by watching your stats and seeing what resonates with your audience. You’ll also find certain topics get you fired up. Dig deeper in those.

#2: Grab Attention with Keyword + Benefit + Curiosity

Headlines, titles, and email subject lines are about Benefit + Curiosity.

The benefit taps into what’s in it for your audience. Why should they drop what they’re doing and look at this content now?

Curiosity drives action. How is this piece of content different from what they expect? How are you teasing them with what’s hidden inside the content of the video?

But you also need to think about the keyword phrases you’re targeting. What is your ideal audience already searching for?

As a newer channel, you need to go after longer tail keyword phrases. For example, it would be tough to rank for “early retirement”, but you could find a bunch of longer keyword phrases to create content around such as “early retirement in Mexico”, “ACA health insurance for early retirement”, “early retirement for teachers”, etc.

Use that formula when creating titles for your videos:
Keyword + Benefit + Curiosity

#3: Jumpstart You channel

Do you have an audience anywhere else?

Promote your new videos to them. Your email list is more likely to watch your videos than a cold audience and can help increase your total watch time (signaling to Youtube to show your video to similar people).

It can also be worth doing a little advertising for your videos.

Yes, some ads can be beneficial in helping you launch your free traffic method!

It’s a little shortcut. Create some videos. Improve your skills. Watch for a video that gets a good response with a larger number of views, more comments, and new subscribers joining your channel.

Run a low budget ad for that video to show it to more people.

Test little ads like this for several different videos.

You might be surprised, but there are a lot of ‘social media success stories’ that included some advertising to help juice their growth.

Of course, Youtube is just one way you can create a consistent traffic and list building machine.
