You’ve heard the news.
A recession is here. And you’ve been told it’s going to get worse.
But the good news is you can choose NOT to participate in it!
My online business grew in 2001 and 2008.
Some people grew their wealth during the Great Depression of the 1930’s.
Recessions bring hardship, but they also bring opportunity.
Focus on an audience with problems you can solve (or burning desires you can help fulfill).
Create a customer focused message.
Start by developing empathy for them.
Perhaps you were your ideal customer. You were in their shoes just a few years ago. You know how it feels to experience whatever they’re going through, because you’ve been there.
One of my clients kept a journal of his experiences for the past few decades. He read a couple of old entries, and they were exactly what he needed to share on his websites, videos, and emails.
He was speaking his ideal clients’ language, because he went through those emotions himself.
In other situations, we’ve had to do our research. Speak to clients directly. Scan the Table of Contents and the reviews of books in Amazon on your topic. Check out the questions being asked in Facebook groups, subreddits on Reddit, or discussion groups.
The more you know your ideal buyers, the easier it is to communicate with them.
Find or create a solution that solves their root problem.
Make it an irresistible offer.
This part becomes even more important when times are tough.
It’s not as easy to get people to whip out their credit card.
How does your offer compare to others?
How should they ‘invest’ their limited finances?
Bonus Tip: Target a more affluent segment of your audience if possible. While there can be struggles all across the board, the pain is felt much more intensely by those at lower income levels. The top 20% in your market are the ones most likely to keep buying.
Communicate consistently.
Earn their trust.
Show you understand by digging deeper into their problem than they can articulate it themselves.
Come at the problem from multiple different angles.
Provide a few quick wins to demonstrate the value you share.
And back up your message with proof.
Everything I’ve shared here can be boiled down to a few simple steps.
- Focus on an affluent buying audience.
- Create an irresistible offer that solves a desperate problem or fulfills a burning desire.
- Come up with a customer focused message that resonates with them.
- Communicate that message consistently.
A lot of times we like to make business overly difficult by majoring in the minors.
Instead, focus on improving the big triggers that can make 2023 your best year ever.
