More than half of small business owners in the United States are over 50.
You’re NOT too young…or too old to start a business.
Now is the time…no matter your age or previous experience.
The youngest customer who sent me a testimonial about his online success was 13.
And I’ve communicated with many in their 70’s and 80’s.
A lot of people think entrepreneurship…especially online…is just for the young.
They couldn’t be more wrong.
I started young, 23 years old, and I’m thankful for that. I was a horrible employee stumbling from one dead-end job to another, and I don’t want to imagine what my life would have been like if I never discovered the Internet lifestyle.
But over the past 2+ decades I’ve helped customers and clients of all ages and from all walks of life start businesses online.
Age doesn’t matter. In fact, I’d say those in their 40’s and 50’s had a higher chance of success.
They had a larger storehouse of experience and knowledge to share with their audience.
They already had a successful career.
They were often just burn-out on the corporate grind or working their tail off to make other people rich.
They wanted to build something that belonged to them.
They wanted to make a difference for others based on something they cared about.
Essentially, they wanted a business they could run in their spare time for the next phase of their life.
The stats about small business confirm this.
According to the US Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, there are 33.2 small businesses across America. Of these, 27.1 million, or 8 out of 10, are run by a single owner with no employees.
Guidant does a yearly Small Business Trends survey. Here are the percentages of small business ownership across generations (along with the commonly reported ages for each):
- Millennials (12.92%) – Age 27 to 42
- Gen X (47.20%) – Age 43 to 58
- Baby Boomers (39.63%) – Age 59 to 77
My own Generation X is the leader here at just under 50%.
The next highest are the Baby Boomers.
The Millennials came in lower than I expected.
