Will ChatGPT and other AI-based tools soon replace copywriters?
That’s what some gurus are claiming, “Buy ‘XYZ AI Ninja’ and you’ll get access to secret prompts that will turn AI into your world-class copywriter.”
Good luck with that!
As usual, it’s overhyped.
ChatGPT isn’t going to replace great copywriters anytime soon.
It will replace mediocre ones.
That’s because ChatGPT is a tool.
Don’t look at it as an ‘expert’.
Instead, see it as a time-saving assistant.
Ask ChatGPT a question, and it’s going to confidently give you an answer.
That answer may be wrong.
Because it’s NOT an expert. It’s an assistant.
Its answer is based on the combined knowledge from everything that has been fed into it.
That’s like the person who has read a lot of books on the topic, but doesn’t have any personal experience.
The best results will be produced by someone who has the expertise, and is able to double check and edit what the AI creates for them.
Imagine a copywriter hires a new assistant.
Perhaps the assistant studied the internet and even knew a few of the popular copywriting formulas.
Will the copywriter hand this new ‘copy cub’ a project…and tell them to write the whole project on their own? Would they turn that into the client as-is?
Hopefully not!
It’s not going to turn out well even if they use all the right ‘prompts’ for the copywriting cub.
Instead, the copywriter will oversee the project. They might have the cub help with brainstorming. Perhaps they’ll have the cub do some of the grunt work.
But in the end, the copywriter will go through everything word-by-word to make sure it’s ready to hand to the client.
Personally, I’ve found ChatGPT to be a great tool for brainstorming ideas.
Feed it good information. Describe your audience in detail. What is their desperate problem?
Tell it what your product or service does, and what sets it apart from the competition.
If you have testimonials, share those as well.
Then prompt it with something like, “Write 50 attention grabbing and emotional headlines using a mix of copywriting formulas.”
Or you could be specific about the types of headlines you want.
Will you use any of those headlines as-is?
Probably not. But I rarely use any of my rough draft headlines as-is either. I edit them, combine them, and create something even stronger by mixing ideas together.
Link to your landing page and ask it to write 20 Google Ads. Mix-and-match to create the ones you want.
Ask it to write 50 email subject lines to give you some ideas.
Brainstorming like this is just the beginning of what your assistant can do under your guidance.
You can assign it to create outlines, write specific sections, plan slides, etc.
You can ask it to read through something and spot anything that isn’t clear and easy to understand.
But it does all this as your assistant…not as the expert.
The Internet has changed dramatically over the past 2+ decades I’ve been online…and it’s changing even faster today.
But one that that has stayed true is the importance of persuasion and copywriting.
