I don’t know how many times I’ve seen that phrase used on business opportunity ads.
There are all kinds of mental gymnastics they go through to make that claim.
For example, they’ll talk about serving instead of selling.
And yes, you should do that.
You should serve people. Provide value for free. Create content that attracts customers and clients.
Make a difference in the lives of people even if they never purchase anything from you.
But at some point you have to ask for the sale.
You call out to a desperate problem. You let people know what you can do for them. You back it up with proof.
Then you make an irresistible offer and give them a reason to act now.
There are a lot of online marketers who fall to pieces when it comes time to ask for an order.
For example, I’ve reviewed thousands of emails from clients and customers over the years.
And there are two common mistakes.
The first is being too aggressive and going right for the sale immediately in every email. That can work for a while, but it burns out a list pretty quickly.
The second mistake is what I often call ‘selling from the back foot.’
They write a great story that grabs attention and builds interest.
They include multiple valuable tips that benefits their readers.
But they screw it up when it comes time to transition to their offer.
Instead of boldly sharing their product or service, they just quickly throw a link to their website and call it day.
Then they wonder why almost no one clicks over to their website…and no orders come in.
Some of them do it time and time again until I eventually beat it out of them (please note that’s a figure of speech and no actual clients were physically beaten).
They can’t sell because they’re worried about coming across as a salesperson.
They have a preconceived notion of a salesperson…some sleazy fast-talking guy that will manipulate little old grandmothers to make a sale.
And frankly, there are some salespeople like that. If you’ve on this planet long enough, you’ve probably met a few of them.
But as long as that is the dominant image in your mind, you’re not going to make it in business…online or anywhere else.
Because no one makes money until something is sold.
Ethical persuasion is about being sold on your own product or service first. You know it is the best solution for at least a portion of the market.
Then you create a message or series of messages designed to attract the right buyers…people you can serve and make a real difference in their lives.
And because you know the value you can offer…you boldly let them know about it.
You tell them who it is for…and who is not for.
