The cobbler’s children have no shoes.
I’ve helped multiple clients put systematic referral programs in place, but I’ve never done the same for myself.
Even without offering any incentives, customers and clients have referred other ideal clients just like themselves to me.
And even though I’ve rarely sought out joint venture partners, I’ve still picked up millions of dollars in extra sales through partnerships with friends I’ve made along the way.
Today I want to give you a few magic words for generating more referrals.
It’s easy to skip over something like this because you think it is too simple.
So many people are desperately searching for another FOTM ninja list building tornado secret instead.
But breakthroughs are often simple.
Here are the 5 magic words for more referrals…
“Who else do you know?”
There are so many ways you can apply this phrase.
For example, let’s say you’re a podcast host who is looking for more great guests.
A guest gives you an entertaining interview, weaving in personal stories along with step-by-step advice for your audience.
At the end of the interview, thank them for doing such a wonderful job.
Follow it up with the magic words, “Who else do you know that would be a great guest to feature on my podcast?”
Then shut up. Don’t sabotage the question by talking over your guest or letting them off the hook before they even have a moment to think.
After a silent period, if they don’t have any suggestions, you could clarify the type of guest you’re specifically looking for.
Most will give at least one name. Some might refer several experts!
Whether they make a suggestion or not, follow-up your discussion with an email that makes it easy for them to refer you.
All they have to do is forward the email to their contact. Ask them to copy you when they send out the email.
You’ll take it from there.
And that’s just one example of the magic words in action.
Maybe you’re the guest and you’re asking the host for referrals to other podcasts.
An affiliate generates excellent results from a promotion for you. Use the magic words.
A client reports amazing results from your most recent recommendation. Ask the magic words.
Of course, referral-based marketing goes deeper than this as well.
