I’m going to go out on a limb and make an educated guess about you…
You’re likely overcomplicating your business.
And you’re overthinking your decisions.
Why do I say this?
Because I’ve coached hundreds of online entrepreneurs over the years.
And while the above two statements don’t apply to everyone, they are common problems.
So, it’s worth taking a few minutes and considering whether they apply to you or not.
Here are just a few of the ways I’ve seen clients overcomplicate their businesses:
- They had a list of tech tools they were actively paying for but weren’t using.
- They had multiple multi-step funnels that were difficult to explain.
- They created segmentations of their email list that they never got around to emailing.
- They were participating on too many social media platforms.
- They had too many products which confused both them and customers.
- They were targeting too broad of an audience and their ideal customer wasn’t clear.
In addition, it’s easy to overcomplicate things because you hear about successes others are experiencing, and you try to implement those same techniques in your own business.
Plus, consultants, coaches, and course sellers often benefit from making things look more complicated than they need to be. Otherwise, you might not need them.
Soon everything can become a mess of complexity.
Overthinking is a good buddy of overcomplication.
There are so many options online that it’s easy to become paralyzed by indecision.
Beginners often struggle to choose a niche market to go after or how to monetize their business.
Sadly, it’s possible to get stuck there for months or even years.
But even experienced and extremely successful online business owners get stuck with analysis paralysis.
Perhaps they’re trying to choose the absolute best funnel to use for their business (Lead magnet optin, low-cost product sale, webinar, consultation, etc.)?
It depends on your audience and your offer. I’d suggest an optin offer with a Lead Magnet related to your first product or service as the default choice.
Or perhaps it’s about the traffic source to focus on. There are so many options there.
You again need to choose one (or more) that fit your audience along with your personality and assets (you wouldn’t choose organic Youtube if creating video feels like medieval torture).
It makes sense to take time to think through those big decisions for your business.
Overthinking becomes a problem when it starts showing up even in smaller decisions.
For example, should you send this email or that one?
Probably both.
Which benefit should you focus on in the headline for your new product launch?
Go back to what you know about the audience and their most desperate problem or burning desire.
The headline is important enough that you might want to test several different options.
What about the color of the order button? It probably doesn’t matter unless the button blends into the page too much and customers don’t see it.
Test BIG changes to your website. Most small tests are inconclusive. There’s simply no noticeable difference unless you have a massive amount of traffic.
There are a LOT of decisions where you can get stuck overthinking them…where it probably doesn’t even matter.
