What I’m about to share with you may be surprising, especially since I’ve made an incredible living selling online for the past 21 years.
There have been a lot of times I just didn’t want to write the sales copy for a new product or service.
I’d procrastinate. I wouldn’t feel ‘inspired’, so I’d do something instead.
When I eventually forced myself to do it, I’d sit there staring at a blank screen.
Nothing was coming out.
As I mentioned in my previous email, selling has never come naturally to me.
I’d much rather just teach and share. And of course, I get to do that too, but bringing in the money means something has to be sold.
So over the years I’ve collected multiple shortcuts to create high-converting copy FAST.
One of those techniques is modeling successful ads.
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
Let’s start with the headline.
You could try to come up with a headline from scratch.
But that’s a hit-or-miss type of situation.
And you’re likely to sit there looking at that dreaded empty page.
Instead, I start the process by scanning a list of proven headlines.
Some of them are ones I’ve personally used in the past.
Others are simply winners from world-class copywriters.
For example, here’s a classic headline from John Carlton…
“Amazing Secret Discovered By One-Legged Golfer Adds 50 Yards to Your Drives, Eliminates Hooks and Slices…And Can Slash Up to 10 Strokes From Your Game Almost Overnight!”
How could a golfer see that headline and not want to read more?
Sure, maybe it sounds a bit out of this world. Your BS detector goes off.
But the purpose of the headline is to simply stop you in your tracks and get you to read more.
That headline doesn’t pull in punches. You have to know more about this one-legged golfer.
Let’s take that headline as a model…and let’s say we’re writing copy for a course on copywriting.
How about something like this…
“Amazing Secret Discovered By Bankrupt Street Cop Triples Your Online Sales, Eliminates Writer’s Block…And Creates Order-Producing Website Copy In 60 Minutes or Less!”
The only words I kept from the original are “Amazing Secret Discovered By…”
The rest of it are my words, but it’s based on the same rhythm and flow as the original.
And that’s just one headline.
I’ll pull out several more proven headlines and model them as well.
Then I start mixing and matching from the different headlines.
The end headline is usually going to be quite a bit different from the starting point.
And that’s just one little trick you can use to skip over the blank page and get started with something you know is going to work.
