“Marketing is the generous act of helping others become who they seek to become. It involves creating honest stories—stories that resonate and spread.” – Seth Godin
I didn’t want to tell my story anymore!
As you know, I first started online in 1996 when dinosaurs like Compuserve roamed the internet.
I was a pizza delivery driver with over $50,000 in debt and a basement corner full of failed business opportunities.
Then I discovered the Internet.
I heard a few people were succeeding online, and I thought, “Here’s something I can finally do…”
So, I bought my first 75 Mhz PC at Best Buy, subscribed to a dial-up connection, and ventured to teach myself about the Internet.
Through a bunch of misadventures and missteps I discovered my flow.
Email was the secret. It was my pathway to communicating with a hungry buying audience week-after-week.
Drip…drip…drip…until a relationship is built and a sale is made.
Email took me from being a broke pizza delivery driver to earning an excellent living online for over 24 years now.
I started by selling other people’s products…telling their story.
But then people wanted to hear my story. They wanted to know how I did it.
So, I told my story and gave my steps to success.
It was good.
But eventually I got tired of telling my story.
And my income took a hit almost immediately.
I’m not the sharpest tool in the toolshed, but I quickly noticed the difference.
I started sharing my story again in emails, at conferences, in sales copy, and in products.
Your story matters.
Stories entertain, inform, and inspire.
They motivate us to action.
You have an origin story.
And you also have little mini-stories that illustrate the problems you solve and benefits you deliver.
Here’s a question to think about…
What is your most surprising story?
It could be your origin story about a problem you faced and what motivated you to action.
It could be a story about how you or someone else discovered the product you sell. What sets it apart from every other option in the market?
It could be a story about a client who achieved amazing results.
It could be a story about the science behind what you do.
You have a story to tell.
And that story can be expanded in dozens of different ways.
Are you telling it?
Or are you hoping to persuade people with facts and reason?
You’ve probably seen just how effective facts and reason are by themselves. They’re great for backing up the story, but they’re weak on their own.
Autoresponder Alchemy is about way more than email.
