I’ve heard many business owners complain about how much clients suck.
They claim clients are overly demanding, try to negotiate down their rates, and don’t pay on time.
And they’re right. They likely have bad clients.
Because here’s the truth about clients…
It’s YOUR Fault If You’re Attracting Bad Clients.
It’s your positioning and your messaging.
If you project neediness, you’re in for a world of hurt. You’re going to be stepped on and taken advantage of.
It’s the sad reality of business.
For example, don’t negotiate your rates…especially for someone who promises you more business in the future.
I’ll quote the Joker from The Dark Knight…
“If you’re good at something, never do it for free.”
Another mistake is positioning yourself as a miracle worker. You’re going to attract clients desperate for a miracle.
That means they’re broke and hoping for a big win. In most cases, the reason they’re broke is because they don’t what they’re doing.
You could do an incredible job of what you do, and it still won’t work for them. They’ll screw it up, because they don’t have the other pieces of the puzzle in place.
This is why I focus so much on getting to know your Ideal Client.
These are the clients who want what you sell. They get results from your products and services.
They continue to buy from you for years or even decades to come. They’re grateful for what you do.
They send you testimonials. They refer you to others. It energizes you when you see an email from them or schedule a call with them.
Compare that to clients who drain the life out of you.
They have a bad attitude.
Good clients are filled with hope, but poor-quality clients are jaded. They’ve failed before and it probably won’t work for them this time either. They refuse to do the work. They’re whiny and complainy.
They won’t take ownership of the problem or the solution.
It’s someone else’s fault…probably yours.
Here’s one of my core rules…
If you try to speak to everyone, you end up connecting with no one in particular.
I have multiple methods I share with my members about how to understand your ideal clients’ buying language.
There are phrases I use in my websites and emails that speak directly to my ideal clients…while repelling those I can’t help.
Your audience self-selects based on the ‘new world’ you create and communicate to them consistently.
Take a good, hard look at the messages you’re sending if you’re not attracting customers and clients you love.
