online rejection“Sure, I’m not afraid to go out with you.”

Yep. That’s what she said when I first asked her out. It’s sure wasn’t…how about Friday night…nor was it OK. And it definitely wasn’t an enthusiastic YES.

It was I’m not afraid to go out with you.

I responded back to her, “OK, it’s great to know I don’t have that serial killer look to me, so how about Friday night?”

If you think that exchange was interesting, you should have seen the first time I told her those 3 little words…that mean so much.

We hadn’t been dating that long. We were at the Glenn Miller Park in Richmond, Indiana. It was beginning to get dark out.

I put myself out there emotionally…and said the words I had never said to a woman before.

I leaned over close to her and quietly said, “I love you.”

Her response was definitely not what I expected…at all…not in a milloin years. But we’ll get to that in a minute.

What does any of this have to do with you?

The lesson I learned here affects everyone whether you like it or not.

We have this expectation that everything should be easy. Online we’ve been told how EASY it is to start a business. We’ve been told we can make money sitting at home in our underwear.

And you can, but please don’t try that if you have a webcam hooked up…

Yet, the reality is that everything doesn’t always go smoothly. It isn’t always easy.

If you’ve been on my list for any amount of time you’ve probably seen me talk about the fact that I believe it’s SIMPLE once you really understand the key principles, BUT simple is not always easy.

It was simple for me to say I love you. But it wasn’t easy.

With the right information, internet marketing can be simple. But it’s not easy.

The response you get back might not always be what you expect. You will have to work hard for what you want.

Have you ever noticed that anything truly valuable in your life didn’t come easy. You worked hard for them. You didn’t just slide into them without hassles.

And they often cost a little pain, sweat, and tears along the way.

Your online business will be similar.

I’ve sent out emails where some subscribers complained and used all kinds of language I won’t repeat here. The majority of your subscribers will be wonderful people just like mine are, but there is a small vocal element who is offended that you would dare email them after they signed up for your list.

When you contact JV partners to promote your product, many of the people you contact won’t even respond. You have to expect that rejection (more like silence as I don’t think I’ve ever had a potential JV partner be rude in their response…not once).

In social media, everyone might not like you. Oh my…

See that’s something I can be thankful to my wife for. We’ve been married for 16 years now, but she definiltey gave me some interesting responses back when we were dating.

When I leaned over to her and quietly said, “I love you.”

She responded with, “Yeah right…and your mother wears combat boots.”

I’m sure you expected by now it wasn’t the response I was looking for, but did you guess that response. I doubt it.

I lived through it. And you can live through any difficulty your online business may go through, whether it’s an angry subscriber, no response from a JV partner, or traffic doesn’t convert. There is an answer.

Those were simple words that weren’t easy to say. And the response wasn’t easy to hear.

But do you see the real issue here…

She didn’t believe me. She didn’t trust me yet.

And it’s the same with your audience online. It takes time to build relationships for your online business. And the biggest barrier you have to get past is trust.

That’s where consistency comes in for your blog posts, your emails, your videos, etc.

Keep sending them emails. Keep posting to your blog. Use that consistency of contact to build your relationship.

Over time you will grow an audience who knows, likes, and trusts you.

It’s the key to overcoming the fear they have of doing business with you.

Maybe one of these days I’ll tell what happened when I proposed…
