In Monty Python’s Search for the Holy Grail, Arthur is asked how he became king…
“The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.”
To which Dennis responds…
“Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.”
Too many online marketers are waiting for someone to hand them a sword…and make them king.
If only…they could connect with this person or that person.
Or maybe when they get big enough…
Or maybe someone will just give them permission…
But most experts simply claimed their own title.
Make yourself king of your market.
What is it that you do for your audience?
What do you do better than the competition?
What title could you claim that no one else has claimed yet?
I claimed a title as “The Internet Lifestyle Mentor” a long time ago because I was the first one that I know of to use the phrase the “Internet Lifestyle” and over the years I’ve probably personally mentored more people to create their
online Lifestyle businesses than anyone else.
What name could you claim for yourself?
Don’t wait for anyone else to ‘appoint’ you for the position.
Decide who you help…what you do…and what sets you apart.
If you’re struggling to figure that out, brainstorm with someone else.
Write down a whole bunch of ideas.
Read through all your testimonials.
Ask a few of your best clients why they chose you over the competition.
Hire a coach to help you come up with even more ideas.
A lot of business owners have “Proof Hiding Disease” which is the inexplicable need to bury your best proof deep in your website in sheepish statements no one ever reads.
They also have “Uniqueness Hiding Disease” which is that strange psychological force that makes you say, “there is nothing special about me, my company, or my offer.”
And if you do find something special, you make sure to bury that too so no one finds it.
Because if you somehow stood out…people might take notice of you…and someone, somewhere might not like it.
It’s so much safer just to stay invisible.
But if you stay invisible…you also stay broke.
The key element here is not to wait for anyone else to announce to the world what is special about you.
Look at your accomplishments, your background, your testimonials, your experiences, your personal style, and everything else to find something you can claim to be the best at.
Make that title yours.
And there’s no rule that says you can’t try out several different titles either.
And then if you’d like to know how to use that title along with building an authority persona that sells more of your products and services, check out Autoresponder Alchemy.
The course is focused on email…because that’s the primary driver of income for my clients and I.
But the same principles apply to any other type of content marketing you use.
By the time you’re finished…you’ll know how to position yourself as different from the competition…attract the right customers and clients…and make more money in any type of online business.
