Have you ever heard this saying?
“Do what you love, and the money will follow.”
Sounds great, but it’s a lie.
Just because you love doing something, doesn’t mean thousands of people are lining up to buy it.
But all lies have an element of truth.
The truth is that you can find something you enjoy…that brings you fulfillment…that also gives value to the world at large.
Who wants to live their life doing something they hate? Life is too short for that!
The big problem with this meme is it leaves out two other important components.
First of all, you need to be able to target an audience of buyers online.
You’re out of luck if you can’t cost effectively reach the audience online…they’re not willing to spend money on the problem…or they can’t afford to buy what you offer.
That’s why I always suggest you invest at least a few days minimum to research your audience through Amazon reviews, niche discussion boards, keyword tools, and what is being shared in social media.
It’s even better if you can speak to potential customers over the phone or in person such as at an industry expo.
So you’ve found a niche you’d enjoy…and you know there is an audience of buyers you can target online.
What’s the next piece of the puzzle…the one gurus don’t like talking about?
You need a message that matches the market.
That seems simple enough, but it gets left out in all the ‘push button’ profit hype.
It can’t be someone else’s message.
It has to be your own unique message…with contrarian content that magnetically attracts your audience to you.
The secret is positioning yourself as a trusted adviser to your audience.
You’re someone who authentically shares the truth and points them to a better way.
Copying someone else’s message won’t create that for you.
Sure, you could ‘model’ proven styles and templates. I’ve done that many times with website headlines. You find a proven headline, and you use it as a template to create a winning headline for your audience.
BUT you can’t just take the headline word-for-word. You still have to understand your audience and modify the headline to match your market.
It’s the same for any proven templates you may model…landing pages, sales pieces, videos, emails, etc.
There are marketing models you can tap into, but success will ALWAYS rely on delivering a message that stands out in your marketplace.
Gurus don’t like sharing that fact, because it’s a little scary.
But it’s also what makes business fun. You find an audience and deliver a unique message to them. You say…
“Why isn’t anyone else talking about this?”
