Business is booming for CNN…thanks to Donald Trump!
He is one of the best things to happen to them in years.
In fact, they have quite a symbiotic relationship going on.
CNN helped make Trump president.
Trump helped them post record profits.
If you listen to CNN, you’ll hear how Trump is an evil, racist criminal intent on total destruction of the entire world.
Listen to Trump, and you’ll hear how CNN is a terrible, rude organization that publishes Fake News.
Trump used CNN to get more media attention during the election than any president before him.
CNN taps into hatred of what Trump does to keep an almost endless news cycle running about him.
It kind of reminds me of wrestling when I was growing up.
In wrestling, a ‘heel’ plays a villain character who is antagonistic to the heroes.
Donald Trump just so happens to be a big wrestling fan and had several major appearances on WWE wrestling, including confrontations with Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania.
What do you want to bet he planned out the hero/heel relationship with CNN?
Trump and CNN are playing for two different audiences.
CNN has made Trump out to be the heel.
Trump has made CNN out to be the heel.
CNN tells a story about how they’re the heroic media exposing the evil president.
Trump tells a story about how he’s the heroic president attacked by evil biased media.
And both of their audiences are eating up these stories.
Trump became president.
CNN posted record profits.
And the feud continues.
This illustrates one of the key components in storytelling.
A hero needs a villain.
Luke Skywalker needed a Darth Vader.
Who or what is the villain in your own story?
The is a Desperate Problem you help people overcome.
You’re the underdog facing off a giant standing in your way.
It doesn’t need to be a specific person.
Natural health often uses the pharmaceutical companies as their villain…big faceless corporations that their audience already hates.
What is your audience frustrated with already?
What is the common way your competitors do business…and how do you turn it around?
Sometimes your villain is simply business-as-usual in your industry.
Have you tapped into an emotional story that resonates with your buying audience?
It doesn’t need to speak to everyone.
It only needs to speak to your tribe.
