Here’s a common question I receive from clients and subscribers…
“How much ‘content’ should I share with my audience?
Guru A says I should move the free line and give everything away for free.
Guru B says you don’t want to share too much. Just tease to keep people interested.”
There are a LOT of ways you could answer that.
But I reject the question itself.
It’s NOT about how much ‘content’ you give away.
Instead, you need to ask yourself a different question…
“How can you position yourself as a trusted guide for a hungry buying audience?”
That often includes amazing content.
For example, I have clients who give away the farm for free…
One client gives a complete book in digital form (although a lot of customers still buy it in paperback or audible).
Another client shares a free app that helps users achieve their goals.
Several clients run Youtube channels where they share detailed, step-by-step systems with their viewers.
And many clients give away valuable cheat sheets, videos, audios, blog posts, and more as lead magnets and in their email sequences.
But positioning yourself as a trusted guide is about more than just content.
Your audience is overwhelmed with content today.
Constipated content is everywhere.
What is “constipated content?”
It’s dry, boring content that isn’t mixed in with your personality, stories, or direction.
It’s facts, tips, or steps without empathy and expert guidance.
The AI revolution is making the problem even worse. With the right prompting, AI can help you produce authority-driven content faster, but the massive avalanche of content being regurgitated by AI today is just adding more noise.
Your audience has questions.
They have problems plaguing them.
And it’s tough to sort through all the voices out there.
They’re looking for a guide that doesn’t just fill their head with knowledge, but also gives them clear direction.
They need a trusted advisor.
Answer their questions. Dive deeper into the root cause of the problem than others do. Share your story and the experiences of others. Let them know their options, and at the same time, point to the solution you recommend and why it’s the right choice.
Stop being wishy-washy. Speak with authority. Share from experience.
Do that in an entertaining way and you’ll attract and resonate with your audience.
“But how do I know if I’m giving away too much?”
It’s difficult to give too much authority driven content today.
Let’s take email as an example.
It’s simply not the right medium for in-depth teaching. Email is better as a short bite that include a hook, one insightful lesson, and call-to-action.
Most social media content is similar. You can include a quick photo, example, mini-story, etc., but it’s not really a great tool for delivering a step-by-step system.
What about longer form content such as podcasts or Youtube videos?
Remember to focus on infotainment. It’s not just about steps or tips. It’s about leading them through your story including the problem, what you tried, and what worked for you.
You need to find the right channels that fit you and your audience.
