“How long does it take to make money online?”
That’s a question I’ve heard hundreds (maybe thousands) of times over the years.
I wish there was an easy answer, but the truth is it depends.
I’ve had clients who were making decent money within their first 30 days.
But that’s not the norm.
And I’d never tell anyone to plan for that if they’re starting out from scratch.
See, that’s the issue no one likes to talk about.
Some people have advantages coming in.
If you already have a website up and traffic coming in…it’s a whole lot easier to get you into profit even if you’ve never sold anything before. You already have a ‘built-in’ audience that’s ready to go…and you simply need to connect them to an irresistible offer.
In addition, those with previous business experience…even if it was an offline business…have an advantage as well.
What I usually tell people is they need to give themselves at least 6 to 12 months when they’re starting out from scratch.
“But dude, I need money now!”
Get a job.
I remember someone emailing me that they had been living off unemployment and severance for the past year…and they needed to get a business running in the next two weeks before it ran out.
Umm…what have you been doing for the last year?
As I said, it’s possible to choose a market, get a website up, start driving traffic, and even generating income in a month, but it’s not likely.
It takes time to build a business.
I’m not sure why that comes as a surprise to people.
If you want to be a physician…you’re going to spend 4 years in pre-med, another 4 years in medical school, and then several years in residency.
And for most, the first 8 years will result in a lot of debt you’ll be repaying later.
I’ve had several clients who were doctors that transitioned into building an online business because they wanted freedom.
What if it takes you the next 6 months, 12 months, or even 24 months to get your business up and profitable online?
If it’s not worth that to you, then maybe you’re not cut out for an online business.
I know this isn’t an exciting rah-rah message.
It would be a lot more fun to write about those who went from zero to 5 figures in a month, but they are ‘exceptional’ cases…and often they had some advantage.
For example, maybe they’ve already practiced copywriting for months, had connections with a few potential JV partners, or had a product ready to go.
I’m always a little suspicious when seeing exceptional case studies. What went on behind the scenes?
This should be an inspirational message.
You’re going to face the same hard work everyone else faces to succeed online. It takes time and a lot of effort to get the momentum moving.
But it’s worth it for the lifestyle and the freedom you can create.
