Sell More Without Being a Jerk

It’s no surprise so many people have bad feelings toward selling.

Very few want to be seen as a salesperson.

Just mentioning the word brings up negative experiences from your past.

You remember that one guy who was willing to say or do anything to make the sale. It was all about manipulation.

A client told me recently about a copywriter he hired.

The copywriter immediately started the project by writing a fake story.

Lying was OK to this copywriter, because it was just business.

The sad thing is how common this is.

Another client hired a well-known copywriter a few years ago. He got back copy full of fake testimonials.

It’s easy to become jaded in business. Personally, I discount most claims I see, because exaggeration is so common online.

It’s sad.

Because you can sell more without being a jerk.

You don’t have to make things up.

If you invest the time to listen to your audience and find out their pain points…you’ll see what’s going on in their heart.

Develop real empathy for them.

Find a true story that connects with your audience emotionally.

You don’t have to manipulate them.

In fact, if you’re manipulating people, you’re likely attracting the wrong audience.

Sure, you can make money that way, but you’ll enjoy your business and life a whole lot more when you care about your customers and clients.

Make a difference in their lives.

Give value.

Invite them into a story that inspires them and brings out the best in them.

Everyone is NOT your audience.

Get clear on the customer you want to attract.

Who are they? What desperate problems are they facing? What solutions are they looking for?

And one of the most important questions you can ask is…

Who do they aspire to become?

At the same time, get clear on the customers you don’t want.

It’s not about casting the net as wide as possible.

Instead, it’s about laser targeting the right customer…someone your product or service can help…someone who will feel good about the choice they made to do business with you.

It’s amazing what a difference this makes.

Whether you’re just getting started in your business or you’ve been at it for years…take a step back and look at your ideal client again.

What do you have to offer them specifically?

Write to them…and no one else.
