My first few years online were a lot of trial and error!
I often joke that I learned what worked online by discovering everything that didn’t first.
That’s NOT the best path to success, but I didn’t know anyone who could guide me back then.
Of course, I studied pretty much every book and course I could get my hands on about direct marketing, copywriting, and product creation.
I was desperate to learn, and tested as many ideas as possible.
Soon I was earning a consistent full-time income from my business.
But learning never stops…at least it shouldn’t.
John Carlton made a multi-thousand dollar offer which included several of his copywriting products plus direct feedback on your sales letters for a year.
I jumped at the opportunity. This was early in the internet days and he required you to mail him your sales letters for review. So, I printed out my websites and sent them to him one at a time.
I got back my first review a week or two later.
He told me the sales copy itself was good.
He suggested a new headline.
I sent him the next website.
Same thing. He said it was good, but he changed my headline again.
You can probably guess what happened on the third submission.
So, was it worth it?
That’s a resounding YES. A couple of the websites were new, and his headline was obviously better so I never tested them against my original version. Those products sold like crazy…
One website had already been selling for a year. His new headline…with no other changes on the website…immediately increased the sales by an extra $3,000 a month.
That one headline paid for his services in less than month. Everything else was gravy.
But it wasn’t even the headlines themselves that delivered the most value.
Even though all he did was send me new headlines, it changed my mindset.
I saw by personal experience how important great headlines are.
It’s worth the time and effort to get that element just right. Even deleting or modifying a word or two can make a dramatic difference.
And of course, my skill with writing headlines improved.
At the same time, I saw how valuable it is to get feedback from someone with experience.
Your skills improve faster. Results come quicker.
It has a multiplying effect on everything else you do.
I’ve heard similar stories from my own clients.
Nothing pleases me more to see them naturally implementing strategies and techniques I’ve shared with them.
I’ve even heard a couple of them say they ask themselves, “What Terry would do in this situation?”
Several consistently use my methods with their own clients.
The impact continues to spread past my direct influence.
My one-on-one coaching program is often booked up, but I will open several spots after the holidays in January.
